How Copywriting Increases Sales

“I’m waiting for my imagination to run riot.”

The truth is most copywriters try to tell you that they will increase your sales. They suggest the words on the page really make the difference between who comes to your website and who buys from you.

And for a long time, I thought that was true.

I thought that my words had the power to help make a difference in the lives of businesses. But they don’t. Not alone, anyway.

In fact, alone, my words on a page are about as useless as any other piece of the sales or marketing funnel acting by itself – kind of like a phone that rings and rings but no one answer it.

Instead, all of the pieces of your sales funnel, including copywriting, have to act together. So, how can copywriting increase your sales?

An experienced copywriter will look at multiple aspects of your website, including:

  • What do you do?
  • How do you do it?
  • Who do you do it for?
  • What do you want website visitors to do?
  • How do you make money?

And that’s just a series of starter questions. Beyond that, I’m looking at the process you use to attract visitors to your website, and the type of user experience they’ll have once they get there.

How does copywriting increase sales?

Your website writing has to speak to the right audience. It also has to feel like an authentic experience for the users you want to attract.

And at the right junctures on your website, this is crucial to your sales process.

When I do a Powershot with my clients, I might also be looking for:

  • A similar brand message on every page
  • A clear, easy to read story that engages readers
  • Simple instructions for what the reader should do

Then, I’m going to make sure that you’ve technically covered all the bases that get you more sales on your website. These are different for everyone, but they include:

  • At least 500 words / page
  • Interlinking of pages
  • Thorough, natural SEO usage
  • Concise reader directives

What am I really saying with all of this? Copywriting (by an advanced level, expert writer, by the way) increases sales by looking at how your marketing strategy is working with your sales process to capture new client leads and convert them to sales.

We are assessing and correcting any issues that can be easily solved with tweaks to the words you use to discuss your business. And these words, naturally, increase your conversions.

Then, we’re ensuring that the invisible parts of your website, the SEO and behind the scenes functionality, all tie together to give you the benefits of a great website.

Instead, you’ll just feel the difference by drawing in a larger number of clients, increasing your email sign-ups (hello, opt-in), and/or simply attracting clients you actually want to work with. Good deal, right?
